Computer Based Learning in DHS Technology and Computer Science

In this course, we will be using the internet as an important tool for gathering and sharing information.

Below are some aspects of how we will use this powerful tool:

Online documentation of student projects is an important part of student work.  This online documentation will be done with writing describing what you have done, intend to do and reflections about your work in class.  You will save links and other online resources for later reference, you will take photos and video and put them online to demonstrate what your project is and how it works.

For this class, you will create a blog using Blogger.  You will need to create a Gmail account for this.  The blog is a place for you to put your documentation and your reflections about your work.

Email: Each student will need to create an email account for use in class.  We will use a pattern to cloak the identiy to people not in our school.  The naming protocol will be first name last initial course name semester year@gmail.com  For example, a student named Jane Doe in DHS Robotics in Spring 2009 would have an email of Janeddhsroboticss09@gmail.com.  You will need to keep track of your email password.  You will need to follow the terms of service of your email account.  Yahoo.com also has many good features, and it is advisable for you to create a free yahoo account to use for class.  You should use the same name protocol explained above when making that account.

It is likely that we will use online tools such as del.icio.us for saving links, youtube.com or vimeo.com for video and picasa.com or flickr.com for photos.  There are other  modern web applications, often called Web 2.0 that we will find useful and we may use them as well.

Online safety is important, and you should not reveal personal contact information or other details of your life online.  You should not use your last name or the last names of fellow students in your online documentation.

Use of computer in class is for learning.  Students should not expect to treat the computers or the internet access as a toy.
